Gambling Bill Heroes and Gambling Bill Goats

by on

Learn about the politicians that are pro-gambling and anti-gambling. Few issues draw as much debate as the legalization of online gambling. When it comes to the discussion over a gambling bill, there are several politicians who are heroes to those who love to gamble and there are several politicians who come off as the villain. If gambling is something that you are passionate about, then you need to know where certain politicians stand.

Senator Harry Reid (D-NV) has been one of the most outspoken politicians regarding the passage of an Internet gambling bill. He tried to get it tacked onto a bill in December 2010, but was ultimately unable to do it. However, in the light of the government crackdown on Internet poker sites, Senator Reid is expected to introduce legislation in the near future that will take the steps necessary to legalize Internet gambling in the United States. The casino industry donated nearly $1 million to Senator Reid during his most recent reelection campaign and the smart money is on Reid working hard to get this legislation passed.

Senator John Ensign (R-NV), despite his recent resignation, was a hero to the gambling community. He had vowed to do his part in getting a gambling bill legalizing Internet gambling passed. Like Senator Reid, Senator Ensign received a ton of money from the casino industry. In fact, the casino industry was his number one donor in 2010. Gamblers will want to follow this story to see who Governor Brian Sandoval appoints in his place to serve until the November election.

Representative Barney Frank (D-MA) has been more than passionate when it comes to the passage of gambling bills. He tried to get an Internet gambling bill passed in 2009, but Congress began a new session before the bill could be voted on. Regarding the recent Internet poker crackdown, he said that the indictments were “an incredible waste of resources.” He is currently trying to get another bill passed that would legalize Internet gambling in the U.S.

On the other side of the table is Governor Chris Christie. Governor Christie, from the state of New Jersey, is far from being a friend to the gambling community. A gambling bill that would have legalized Internet gambling recently came to his desk, where it was vetoed. While his reasoning was that the bill might be unconstitutional, the end result was the same: the house wins and the players lose.

Senator Kelly Ayotte (R-NH), despite recently changing her tune, does not appear to truly be on the side of those who enjoy gambling. While she was Attorney General in New Hampshire, she vehemently opposed gambling bills that would have expanded gaming in her state. She even said that it would affect the quality of life of those in the state. Then, suddenly, she appeared at a fundraiser sponsored by Foxwoods Casino. As an avid gambler, you want people on your side that are truly passionate about the issues and are not just there for the money.

It can be hard to figure out exactly who is on your side when it comes to gambling bills, but just like you research the players involved in a game before placing your wager, you’ll want to do the same with politicians. Remember, you have a voice and you need to act on it, expressing your support for those who agree with your way of life and to express your disdain for those who like to think they know what is best for you.
